The Future of SprintDevelopers.com

Welcome to the SprintDevelopers website. This forum has been launched to serve the community of developers working on content for Sprint PCS handsets.

I have lots of plans for the future. First and foremost, I want to make it as easy as possible for everybody to write programs for their handset. At the least, anybody should be able to make a "hello world" program and see it run.

For Java enabled handsets, there are freely available development tools from Sun and Sprint. There is plenty of documentation available as well. Unfortunately that only gets you half way. The documentation is sketchy at times and once you've written a program it's rather difficult to install it on your phone.

SprintDevelopers.com aims to improve that situation. I will offer hosting services for you to distribute your own content. There will be custom tools to painlessly upload your applications for distribution. It will also be easy to publish your source code and share what you've learned. Together we will build a community to pick up from where the documented APIs leave off. Articles, FAQS, and step-by-step guides will be available to help you get started.

The first step, is this forum. Please provide feedback on what you think it will take to empower Sprint Developers.

i think this is a great idea...i would love to do more with my phone. It gets frustrating because java is not the easiest language and the current version 1.0 (or 1.1, whatever) has little applicable functionality(other than sendnote and tetris)...i also have a hard time finding basic documentation that would prove wrong my first two mis-educated statements. Anyways this is a great start and i would love to see a sd.com deployed application that was coded by several members

I have one article so far. It explains some of the basics to help you get started.

Is this site open to Connection Card Developers?

Would you be open to having a forum for developers doing app dev in MS Embedded Tools and .NET Compact Framework for the CF2031?

confused

I'm confused...what will your site offer that Sprint's site won't? i mean by joining their program you'll have access to SDKs, Technical Documentation and Support. I imagine that you can't post this stuff on your site earlier than they can right? just curious about the benefits of joining your site...

Beyond just access to documentation, I want to provide tools that enable development. The first one is already on line. That's the Uploader so you can test your own MIDlets. I'm planning a publisher so you can share your MIDlet with others. I'm also working on tools that run on your PC that make uploading and publishing even easier.

Aside from that, Sprint's forum is pretty awful right now. This forum offers better features that make it easier to use.

I'd also like to think that I have some helpful articles that provide more insight than Sprint's technical reference documentation.

This forum is supported by advertising and even though there are only about 100 registered users right now, I'm at least making enough pennies to cover my hosting costs. That's good enough for me. I haven't put the time/effort into this site that I've wanted to. It's not my primary job so new features have been coming along slowly. Thanks for your patience.

I think this site is good...

Yeah, it may only have a 100+ registerred users, but it's FROM the user FOR the user, as apposed to some big company giving you all the info. Sometimes documentations from them are so technical, that a beginner of anything can't even follow. Also, I never liked the Sprint site.... it logs you off right after you logged on, you have to search to find something... I mean at least here I know where I am at all times.

This is a good site!
