MIME Types

If you are establishing a server for Sprint PCS content, make sure the required MIME types are defined.

A web server classifies files into to different types. For example you are probably familar with HTML files that commonly have the .HTM or .HTML extension. It turns out that the file extension actually has very little to do with the file type. Everytime your browser (or phone) requests a web page (or file), the server first passes the file type and then sends the file. Your browser knows what to do with it based on the type (not the extension).

HTML files are preceeded by "text/html" as their type. JAR files should be "application/java-archive" and JAD files should be "text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor".

Remember I said that the file extension isn't important? That's not entirely true. The file extension doesn't matter to the browser, but the server typically uses file extentions to know what type to put in front of each file. For example, somewhere on your server, it knows that .HTM and .HTML files must be preceeded with "text/html".

By default, your server probably doesn't know what .JAD and .JAR files are. You need to tell it. How you do that depends on your server. For example, Apache is a common server and it uses htaccess files. You can add the JAR/JAD types by modifing the .htaccess file to include the following lines:
[code:1:d61b8d36de]AddType text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor jad
AddType application/java-archive jar[/code:1:d61b8d36de]
Then put that .htaccess file in the same directory as your JAR and JAD files.

Alternatively, you can modify the httpd.conf file to ensure that the proper types are defined everywhere on your server. The following is a list of all the types you should have defined:
[code:1:d61b8d36de]AddType text/x-pcs-gcd .gcd
AddType text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor .jad
AddType application/java-archive .jar
AddType text/x-hdml .hdml
AddType text/vnd.wap.wml .wml
AddType image/bmp .bmp
AddType image/vnd.wap.wbmp .wbmp
AddType audio/x-midi .mid
AddType audio/vnd.qcelp .qcp
AddType image/png .png[/code:1:d61b8d36de]
If you are using Microsoft IIS, then you need to go through some configuration options and look for the MIME type declarations. I'm not sure where you'll find it.
